Peggy was born May 3, 1929, the daughter of Margaret Bell (Weston and Ellwood Jay Searl. She married Theodore "Ted" Payne August 1, 1948 in Liberty, NY. They moved to Inlet in 1949, where they called home. 


Ted and Peggy operated Cabin Colony and Grocery; Ted Payne's Bus Service for over 50 years; and Ted's Ice Service for 30 years where she was known affectionately as the "Candy Lady." Peggy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, the American Legion Auxiliary for 50 years, the Inlet Fire Dept. Ladies, P.T.A., and many more organizations too numerous to mention.


Along with her loving husband Ted, of 60 years, she is survived by five children; Barbara Murdock, Inlet, (the late Edward Murdock), Mary Marleau and husband Michael, Inlet, Patrick Payne and Theresa Cipriani of Somers, NY, Lois Payne and Rodney Snyder of Old Forge, and Pamela Freeley and husband Greg of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Adele Burnett & Doug Trumbauer, Dan Murdock, B.J. Marleau, Todd Marleau, Tory Payne, Jesse Payne, Breana Payne, Tyler Payne, Steven Borges, Mikala Cipriani, Robert Ramsay & wife Dana, Joe Ramsay & wife Jill; great-grandchildren, Justin Murdock, Alicia Burnett, Ryan, Kayla, Madisen, and Preston Trumbauer, Robin Murdock, Caden and Sierra Payne.


She is also survived by three brothers, James Searl of Liberty, NY, Dick Searl of Texas, and John Jay Searl of Munnsville, NY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church, Old Forge. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. A reception at inlet Fire Department will immediately follow the funeral services. Calling hours are Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 128 Fern Ave., Old Forge.


 In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to Inlet Ambulance. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
