Charles Harris Thibado

Eagle Bay
Charles Harris Thibado, 78, of 170 Thibado Road, Eagle Bay, passed away at home on August 25, 2009.

He was born in Inlet, at the Thibado family homestead on Sixth Lake, on 27 February 1931, a son of Charles Henry ("Henry") and Hattie Malvina (Payne) Thibado. He graduated from the Town of Webb High School in 1949 and was a Korean War veteran of the US Air Corps from 1950 to 1954, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant.

He returned to Inlet in June of 1954, where he met Marlene J. Chadwick; they were married on 14 November 1954 at West Glens Falls Chapel, Glens Falls, NY, before settling to live in Inlet. Trained by well-known area stonemason Riley Johnston, Charlie built many area fireplaces and chimneys over the next twenty years; he was a fine carpenter and built houses throughout the area and as far away as Saranac Lake, as well as many of the buildings for Camp Eagle Cove.

From 1963 to 1966, Charlie and Marlene owned and operated the Glen Iris Housekeeping Cottages on Fourth Lake; from 1964 to 1976, they owned and ran the Inlet Marina; in 1972, they built and ran the Marina Motel, which they sold in 1978; from 1977 to 1984, they owned and ran Thibados Site-Mixed Concrete in Inlet and Eagle Bay; between 1982 and 1989, they owned and ran Thibados Hardware and Supplies; from 1987 to 1990 they owned and ran Thibados Pit Stop; between 1988 and 1993, they owned and ran Thibados Trading Post, all in Eagle Bay. Thereafter, Charles also worked several jobs for area businesses until he retired in 1998 for health reasons. He was a former member of the Inlet Volunteer Fire Company, the Town of Inlet Planning Board, and the Town of Inlet Zoning Board.

Surviving are his wife of nearly fifty-five years, Marlene; his five children, David and Desalyn (Pinney) Thibado of Baldwinsville, Daniel and Laury (Mason) Thibado of Williamson, Dianne Thibado and Ron Dearlove of Eagle Bay/Inlet, Dennis and Barbara (Skowron) Thibado of Baldwinsville, and Debbie (Thibado) and William Morgan, Sr., of Eagle Bay; his grandchildren, Nichole, Jonathan, Nanette, Jason, Joshua, Jared, Veronica, Felicia, Brandon and Andrew Thibado, all of Baldwinsville, Nelissa Thibado of Buffalo, Noelle Thibado of Columbia, MD, Charles H. Morgan and W. Owen Morgan, Jr., of Eagle Bay; and a great-grandson, Gavin D. Thibado of Baldwinsville.

He is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth (Thibado) Tyler of Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville, Dora (Thibado) Burnett of Old Forge, and Ella (Thibado) Cunningham of Hamilton; one brother, Bernard and Brenda (Meneilly) Thibado of Inlet and Pickwick Dam; and one sister-in-law, Margaret (McGuirk) Thibado of Eagle Bay. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Alfred (Tip) Thibado, who died in 1990, and three brothers-in-law, Alfred Tyler (d. 2000) and John (Jack) Burnett (d. 2006), of Old Forge, and George Cunningham (d. 2007) of Hamilton, NY.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eagle Bay Volunteer Fire Co., Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services (IVES), HASCA, or the American Heart Association. Cremation and arrangements are entrusted to the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Old Forge, NY.
