CLARENCE FOGED, CLINTON, AND FRANK HANSEN, ALMONT, DROWN IN ELK RIVER
BODIES ARE FOUND
One Youth's Body Still Contains Spark of Life When Taken From Water, but Life Soon Departs – Double Funeral Helf Tomorrow.
Two more lives were forfeited as part of the annual toll, exacted by the relentless water, when 14 years old Clarence Foged and 16 years old Frank Hansen drowned in Elk river about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
BODIES RECOVERED
The double tragedy occurred below the mill dam in the river near Hauntown. Fifteen minutes after the boys sank to their death the bodies had been removed from the water. Hansen was still breathing but unconscious. He was in the throes of death and died shortly afterward, attempts to fan a little spark of life to a flame proving in vain.
ONE ALREADY DEAD
Foged was already dead when taken from the water, although he had been under less than a quarter of an hour. On account of a lack of witnesses, little is known concerning the tragedy, the only witness to the drowning being little Alfred Foged, a brother of the drowned boy. Other boys were near but did not see the tragic death of the two boys. It is believed, however, that young Hansen was drowned in an effort to save his friend.
Double Funeral
Coroner Dr. C. F. Kellogg of Clinton was immediately notified and went to the scene of the drowning. He decided, however, that no inquest would be necessary. The bodies were brought to Clinton and to the Knowlton undertaking rooms. Later they were removed to the Hans J. Frederickson home, 542 Fourth avenue, Foged being a son of Mrs. Frederickson. A double funeral will take place at the Frederickson home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. Hansen of the Danish Lutheran church being in charge. Internet will be made in Springdale Cemetery.
Both of the victims of the terrible occurrence had many friends among the youths of Clinton. Hansen was the son of Simon Hansen, formerly engaged in the oil business in Clinton and at one time janitor at the Clinton public library. Recently Mr. Hansen removed to Almont, where he engaged in business as a merchant. Clarence Foged and Frank Hansen were chums while the Hansen family resided in Clinton and young Foged was in Almont as a guest at the Hansen home.
