Onnorie Ellen Baer was the second wife of Eugene Hord.

Eugene Isadore Hord was the oldest son Andrew Jackson Hord (1822-1886) and Mary Jane Hord (1824-1911). He was born in Dublin, Franklin County, Ohio on October 3,1843 where he was raised on the family farm. In September 1,1862, when he was nineteen years old, Eugene enlisted in the Union Army, 13th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Company A. After training, his unit headed south into Kentucky and Tennessee.

On December 24,1862, Eugene contracted the measles and was admitted to the hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where he remained until November 30,1863 almost a full year. Apparently, the measles had seriously infected and weakened his lungs. Around the time he left the hospital and rejoined his unit some confusion in his military records caused him to be erroneously declared a deserter for several months. After this error was corrected he was reunited with his unit in Knoxville, Tennessee where he was hospitalized again for a short while on April 2,1864. In a pension affidavit filed on behalf of Eugene after the War, a comrade who served with him wrote that Eugene “....was always with a cough and weak lungs and was wholly unfit for duty all the time until he was mustered out”.

From Knoxville his unit fought its way into Georgia and by mid 1864 was assigned to General William Sherman's Army. Eugene was transferred from company F to A about this time. The 32nd Ohio Infantry Regiment in which his father and younger brother, Luzern, served was also assigned to Sherman's Army. Their units engaged in numerous battles in Georgia including Chickamauga, Dalton, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Love Joy and Atlanta. Instead of joining Sherman's “March to the Sea” after the Battle of Atlanta, the 13th Regiment Ohio fought its way back through northern Georgia and on to Tennessee where it engaged in the Battle of Nashville in December of 1864. Afterward, the 13th Regiment Ohio spent time in Huntsville, Alabama and again in Nashville before it was sent to New Orleans in early 1865. Eventually, his unit went on to San Antonio, Texas where he was honorably mustered out in October,1865; he then returned to his family in Ohio.

Two years later in 1867, Eugene married Victoria Martin. After the birth of their first child, Dalton (1867-1945), they moved with Eugene's family from Ohio to Shelbyville, Illinois where they purchased a farm near his parents. Victoria died on March 9, 1871; one week earlier her second son, William ("Willie") Hord (1869-1871) died at the age of two, the cause of their deaths are unknown but was likely the flu. Victoria probably also suffered from a broken heart. Afterward, Eugene moved back to Marion, Ohio and on February 25,1873 he married Onnorie E Baer. Together they had four children including twin daughters, viz.; Arthur Philip Hord (1874-1923), Georgia Hord (1879-1903), Josephine Hord (1879-1956), and Mary O Hord Schwartz (1875- ).

In 1881 the family moved to a farm in Buck Township, Hardin County, Ohio. Eugene was an exemplary citizen, conscientious in his civic duties, and scrupulous in every business dealing. He never sought political office, though for a number of years he did serve as a member of the Board of Education of Buck Township at the insistent request of friends and neighbors.

Until his health failed him, he took active interest in the civic affairs of his community and was active in Democratic politics. A man of strong convictions, he was always in the front of any movement for civic advancement and was a citizen esteemed by both his friends and those who knew only his name. Eugene died in Kenton, Hardin, Ohio on June 10,1922, a few months before his 79 birthday.
