He attended Logan grade school and graduated from Springfield Senior High in 1931. Benn took the civil service exam and went to work for Social Security Administration until his retirement.
He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II on the flagship USS Bayfield and participated in the initial assault on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Benn was united in marriage on July 18, 1996, to Jean Harp McCoy. He was known for his honesty, integrity, unique sense of humor, and living life on his own terms. He is survived by his wife, Jean Logan, of Nixa, Mo.; his sister, Hazel Hancock; his niece, Carolyn Dean; and great-nephews, Kelly Dean and David Dean, all of Springfield.
