Roseman "Emil" Johnson, 89, of Cavalier, North Dakota, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at United Lutheran Church, Cavalier. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, November 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Burial will be held at the Mountain Cemetery, Mountain, ND. Emil was born April 18, 1924, in Gardar, ND to Gudmundur and Gudrun (Olafson) Johnson. He attended country schools in the Gardar community until the 8th grade, when he went to work on the family farm. Emil enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 21, 1944 and was stationed in the Southern Philippines, and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1946. He was awarded the Pacific Islander Medal, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star and a Good Conduct Medal. On December 12, 1947, he married Marlene Byron in Langdon, ND. They resided in the Mountain area until 1958, when they moved to Cavalier. In 1960, he began his 30 plus years working for Mayo Construction. Things he enjoyed were woodworking, attending country music concerts, dancing, telling jokes, singing, yodeling, and playing pinochle. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marlene; daughters: Betty (Rodger) Hanson, Antler, ND and Linda (Robert) Schlittenhard, Cavalier, ND. Afi to: Stephanie (Daniel) Schwartz, Cavalier, Heather Marquardt, Cavalier, Sara (Brad) Tix, St. Louis Park, MN, Philip Hanson, Antler, ND; step-grandchildren: John (Stacy) Schlittenhard, De Ridder, LA, Becky (Tony) Thompson, Fargo, ND, Revel (Doug) Sapa Cavalier; great grandchildren: Brittany Schwartz, Michael Krueger, Haley Marquardt, Elaina, Aaron, and Kayla Tix; step great grandchildren: John, Bryan, David and Calob Schlittenhard, Padyn Thompson, Nikki and Toni Sapa: step great-great grandson: Ryker Kemnitz; siblings: Jerry Johnson, Cavalier and Anna Adams, Capitola, CA; sisters-in-law: Cathy Byron, Forsyth, MT, Marie Simundson, Park River, ND; brothers-in-law: Alfred Byron, Cavalier, Oscar (Shirley) Byron, Edinburg, ND and several nieces and nephews.
