He was city engineer in Sioux City, IA in 1886. He then did railroad surveying, and performed maintenance and construction work in Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Louisiana.
In 1898, he was US Deputy Mineral Surveyor in New Mexico. In the Spanish-American War, he was an enlisted man in Troop G, First US Cavalry - Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
After marrying and residing in Welsh, LA, he went to work on constructing the Panama Canal, arriving there on Oct. 26, 1904. In 1911 he was promoted from assistant engineer to assistant engineer in charge of municipal work for the Pacific Division, whose headquarters was in Corozal, Panama. After more than a decade in Panama, he established his home in Florida, and was named Postmaster at Rerdell, Hernando County, FL, and served in that capacity until his death in 1925.
