PVT. Howard Cantrell was on on 7 April 1913 in Nashville Tennessee. He was the son of Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell and Armina Thompson. Not much is currently known about his younger life. His mother became ill and died of cancer in 1928 , and he , his brothers and father are listed in the 1920 U.S Census as living in Chicago Illinois, Cook County. His older Half Brother, Van Martin, from his mother's first marriage remained in Nashville Tennessee, Davidson County.

He enlisted into the U. S Army on 14 March 1941, and was later awarded the American Campaign, Victory Medal and the Atlantic Pacific Campaign Medals for his service. He was Honorably discharged on 3 Mar 1945.[ Source: U.S Military Honorable Discharge Papers ] he married Twice. His first wife was Shirley Wassmer whom he married in Chicago Illinois on 14 May 1949 [ According to Cook County Genealogy records, marriage Index ]. There were no children born. His second marriage was to Clara Kathryn Slown, whom he married 26 Dec 1956 [ Cook County Marriages File# 2427240 ].To them a daughter was born. He died 11 June 1968, in an unmarked grave at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Elmhurst Illinois. On his death certificate he is listed with the Occupation of Clerk Accountant.
