Kansas City, Miss.; Theresa A. BAUMAN, 91, of Kansas City, and a former resident of Burr Oak, died peacefully at Villa St. Joseph Nursing Home, Overland Park, Kan., June 16, 2002.

She was born Aug. 21, 1910, in Grand Junction, Mich.

Theresa graduated from Western Michigan University in 1931 with an AB in Chemistry. She worked in Chemical research in the paper industry in Kalamazoo, Mich., and married John BAUMAN, April 30, 1932. He died Aug. 4, 2000.

The family moved to Chicago, in 1945 and to Kansas City in 1952. She and her husband retired to the family farm in Burr Oak, Mich. in 1976. She was active in religious education and Eucharistic ministry at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, Mich. Following the death of her husband, she returned to Kansas City to be near her family.

Theresa taught chemistry at Central and Southeast High Schools in Kansas City for 20 years beginning in 1955. Her students won many awards for research projects and science fairs. She attended a number of science institutes sponsored by the Nation Science Foundation. She became very active in the American Chemical Society and was one of the nearly teachers to use Chem Sturdy Curriculum. She won numerous awards from Kansas City ACS. In 1964 she earned a master’s degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Theresa is survived by two daughters and three sons, Linda Marie SHUMWAY, teacher in Camdenton, Mo., her husband John and their children; Laura WORDEN, Kansas City, John SHUMWAY, Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeff SHUMWAY, Kansas City; by the Hon. MaryAnn YEATS, Judge of District Court of Western Australia, her husband, Dr. Donald YEATS and their children; Larry YEATS, Perth, Australia, Tom YEATS, Sydney, Australia, and Kelly SIMPSON, Perth; by L. Joseph BAUMAN, President of Cardinal Brands, Inc., of Lawrence, Kan., his wife Joanie (CUSACK) BAUMAN, and their children; Mark BAUMAN, Dana POINT, Calif., Marsha BRITT, Neenah, Wis., Mary FOSTER, Atlanta, Ga., Molly WARD, Kansas City and Meg ROGGERO, Kansas City; by the Rev. William A. BAUMAN, pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Kansas City; and by Dr. John E. BAUMAN Jr., retired professor of chemistry at the University of Missouri, Columbia, his wife Barbara (CURRY) BAUMAN and their children; Dr. John W. BAUMAN, Chapel Hill, N.C., Cathy LAMBERT, Atlanta, Ga., and Amy BAUMAN, attorney, Kansas City. Theresa is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hackman-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis. The Rev. William A. BAUMAN will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the educational institution or the scholarships funds of ones choice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
