My Dad's maternal grandfather. "My Soldier" for the SCV. Son of Edward M. Caldwell and Margaret "Pliny" Davis Caldwell. A Confederate Soldier, he mustered into service on April 2, 1862 at Mouth of the Indian (a place which is, as far as I can determine, now under Claytor Lake), Montgomery County and was a PVT in Company I, 29th Virginia Infantry, then, after the 29th disbanded, Company H, 45th Virginia Infantry. Fought at Cloyd's Mountain, Pulaski County, VA on May 9, 1964. He was captured at Piedmont, VA on June 5, 1864 and held POW at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. (William Jefferson Blythe, Bill Clinton's great grandfather, died in that Camp). Exchanged March 4, 1865, at City Point, Hopewell, VA, he spent the last month of the war in Richmond. He lived for most of the rest of his long life in Tazewell County, VA but moved to Bluefield, WV around 1920 where he resided with his nephew Kiel Alderson.

Told my Dad stories of the war, which were then passed on to me. I have his service and pension records if any historian of the war in Southwestern Virginia or distant family member is interested.
