Jane Scott was the daughter of James & Mary (Eaton or Easton) Scott. The James Scott family had been living in Pennsylvania until shortly after Jane was born at which time James brought his family to Hardin County, OH. By 1848 the Scott family was living in Buck Township of Hardin County. Jane's father was a carpenter and is credited with building some of the earliest houses in the town of Kenton. On December 4, 1854, Jane married Seth Griffith Hyland (a.k.a. "Highland") in the town of Kenton and the couple set up housekeeping in Paris Township, Union County, OH, where Seth earned a living as a potter and farmer. In 1861 Seth moved the family to the Union County village of Jerome where he and Jane resided for the remainder of their lives. Seth and Jane parented 7 daughters: Alice "Allie" Adilla Hyland, Mary Elizabeth Hyland, Rosa "Rosy" Jane Hyland, Candace "Candy" Ann Hyland, Ida Osa Hyland, Darlisca Fern Hyland (also buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery), and Emmaus Maud Hyland (also buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery). Seth was serving in the Civil War as his 7th daughter was being born. He requested and received a furlough to be present at the birth and was home when Jane (Scott) Hyland died of childbirth complications. One week later, the newborn "Emma" died and within three months daughter Darlisca Fern Hyland was also dead. Darlisca and "Emma" are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near their parents.
