Alpheus Herring was born in Madison County, Georgia in 1811, the son of Jonathan (1777-1860) and Susan Hill Herring (1785-1830)

He married Mariah Landers Payton (some ten years his senior) shortly after she was listed as "widow/ head of household" in the 1830 Census. She was the widow of Howard Payton (married 23 Feb, 1820) and brought a daughter and two sons, John Hudson Payton (1821-1865) and James W. Payton (1828-1862) to this marriage.

Alpheus, at age 51, enlisted in Captain Tiller's Company, Echol's Light Artillery, Georgia Volunteers, CSA, on October 29, 1862.(Echols Light Artillery was assembled at Valdosta, Georgia, during the spring of 1862. Its members were recruited in Echols and Lowndes counties. The company served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida and saw action in the conflicts at Olustee and Gainesville. Later it shared in the defense of Savannah but in January, 1865, was broken up. Captain John H. Tiller was in command.) Alpheus survived the war.

His four sons enlisted in Company A, 16th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA (Known as the "Madison County Greys").

Benjamin F. Herring (b.1842): Enlisted July 11, 1861, Private. Killed at Crampton's Gap, Battle of South Mountain, Frederick County, MD on September 14, 1862.

Newton J. Herring (b.1840): Enlisted July 11, 1861, Private, subsequently appointed Sergeant. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA on July 5, 1863. On November 17, 1863 he died of small pox in Fort Delaware, the U.S. Military Prison located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, New Castle County, Delaware (40 miles south of Philadelphia).

Elijah J. Herring (b.1834): Enlisted July 11, 1861, Private. Killed at Knoxville, TN on November 29, 1863 (Battle of Fort Sanders).

Henry L. Herring (1836-1923):Enlisted July 18, 1862, Private. He was wounded in the left arm, and permanently disabled at the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA on May 3, 1863. Pension records show he was on wounded furlough when the war ended.

Also, Alpheus' nephew, Elisha Herring (1840-1916), enlisted in the "Madison County Greys". Elisha enlisted July 11, 1861, Private. Transferred to Company C, 3d BN, Georgia Sharpshooters on June 8, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Sayler's Creek on April 6, 1865. Released at Point Lookout, MD. June 28,1865.

Alpheus was my great great great grandfather.
