John Clark was the son of Joseph Clarke, of Richmond, Rhode Island, and Sarah (Reynolds) Clark, daughter of Joseph and Mercy Reynolds. John was born on 8 July 1740, per his testimony on his Revolutionary War pension application (page 12) Rhode Island's vital records show his birth year as 1740. There is a conflict as to his birth year.

John married Sarah Gardiner, daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (Pierce) Gardiner. They married in 1759/60 in Rhode Island.

John and Sarah died in 1836, in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.

John served as a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War from May 1776 to 1778, enlisting from Richmond, Rhode Island, then as captain from May 1778 to May 1783 under Colonels Christian Dyer and Jonathan Maxon, Sullivans Expedition, 1778. His oldest son, Gardner Clark testified that he was his son and to the honesty of his father.

Nathaniel Perkins of Independence, Allegany, New York, age 71 testified (3 Oct 1834) that he was a soldier in South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island during the war. He lived within 3 miles of John Clark and Captain Paris G. Gardner. He was 15 years old substituting for his father.

After the war ended, he sold his property in Rhode Island, moved to Argyle, Washington, New York, and then moved to Broadalbin, Montgomery County, New York. When he applied for a pension (Number: S28682), in 1832, he lived in Broadalbin, New York.

He was seen living in Caughnawaga, Montgomery, New York on the 1790 Federal Census with 3 males 16 and up, 5 males under 16, and two females. His oldest sons, Gardner and Asa, appear out of the home, living nearby. That would leave Jesse and John the other two males 16 and over. There are five males under 16, Nathaniel, Paris, Russell plus two others. One daughter is living in the home, presumed to be Sarah. The other daughter, Susanna was out of the home, married by this point to Barnabas Kenyon.

All of his children were reported as born in Richmond, Rhode Island.
