Three children (Christine Kantz, Johannes Kantz, and Michael Kantz) were born before Christoph and Sophia Henrietta Kantz married on 17 September 1844. The German word for such a child---born out of wedlock but later legitimized by the marriage of the parents---is "voreheliches Kind". An illegitimate child, in the English sense, is "uneheliches Kind".
When Christine Kantz was born, Alzey was a town in Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein. By the time of her death, Alzey was part of the Deutsches Kaiserreich.
