Spanish writer. He founded the satirical newspaper Gil Blas (1864-1870) and collaborated in the best-known newspapers of the time. He was a quite popular poet who wrote clever verses in an upbeat tone. Among his works: Cabezas y calabazas (1863), a collection of cartoons of his contemporaries; Cien sonetos (1870), of philosophical content; and Chispas (1894), poems in a somber tone similar to the Humoradas of Ramón María de las Mercedes de Campoamor y Campoosorio (1817-1901). His Veladas de otoño (1884) are a collection of leyendas, like those of José Zorrilla y Moral (1817-1893).
