Thomas Sproles was the son of Richard Sproles (also buried in Sproles Cemetery) and the husband of Mary (Polly) Pankey. Although many genealologies show his mother as Lydia Bostick, some say that his mother was Lyda Robinson. He is listed in the 1837 Holmes Co., MS Tax List and as head of household in the 1840 Holmes Co., Mississippi census. Holmes County records showing his name as "Thomas Sproles, Esq", and that he peformed marriages. This would seem to indicate that he was a lawyer and magistrate. His name is on an 1840 list of Holmes County Whig Party delegates to the Mississippi state convention in Jackson. Land records show that "Thomas Sproles" filed for, and purchased, a tract of Holmes County land on Dec 10, 1840 at the Mt. Salus, Mississippi land office. Thomas is listed as the "head of a household" in the 1841 Mississippi State census for Holmes County. Thomas served as executor of his father Richard's Will.
Thomas' gravestone, toppled but still legible, reads: "b. 1810, d. 28 Jul 1844. Age 33 yrs 10 mo." Thomas' wife Mary Pankey (who married Elijah C. Gober after Thomas death) rests beside him. Her gravestone, toppled but still legible reads: "Mary Gober wife of Thomas Sproles, b. 9 Jul 1814. After his death married E.C. Gober. d. 15 Mar 1851. Age 36 yrs 8mos 6da."
Thomas and Mary Pankey Sproles' children were: Stephen R. (married Virginia Durham), Mary Ann (married Levi Fowler), Sarah M. (married James Ellis), Henry and Martha Sproles (married first W.Bennett and second J.Covington).
