Richard was the son of Solomon, Sr. and was born when his father was about 40 years old. He is listed in the Richmond Co., N.C. census of 1830. It is said that he came from N.C. to Holmes Co., MS with William Allen who was said to be a cousin. Records show a government grant of Castalian land to William Allen in 1835. Richard moved from Richmond Co., N.C. to Holmes Co., Mississippi, about 1833 and is listed in the 1840 Holmes Co., federal census and in the 1841 Mississippi State census of Holmes County as "head of a household". Land records show that "Richard Sproles" filed for and purchased a tract of Holmes Co. land on Dec 10,1840 at the Mt. Salus, MS land office and another tract on Dec 27,1841 at the Columbus, Mississippi land office. Goodspeed's "Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, Vol.2, 1891" states that "Richard Sproles opened and dug Castalian Springs which afterward became one of the finest resorts in Mississippi". Richard's name is on an 1840 list of Holmes Co. Whig Party delegates to to the Mississippi state convention in Jackson, MS. Richard's "Will" (Will Bk 1, pg.54) dated and probated 1845, is filed at the Holmes Co. courthouse. His gravestone shows he died at age 57yr 8mo 20da.
