Panamanian Patriot, Financier, Philanthropist. At age 13, Manuel Espinosa Batista joined relatives on the Isthmus of Panama where he studied and worked in a pharmacy. By 1882, he had established his own pharmacy on Avenida Central. The same year, he financially guaranteed the establishment of the National Lottery by Jose Gabriel Duque, becoming director in 1899. He was elected to Panama's city council in 1897 and became active in the movement for Panama's separation from Colombia. In fact, it was in his pharmacy where meetings of the Revolutionary Committee were organized. (The committee consisted of himself, Jose Agustin Arango, Manuel Amador Guerrero, Nicanor de Obarrio, Ricardo Arias, Federico Boyd, Carlos Constantino Arosemena, and Tomas Arias.) Following proclamation of independence on November 3, 1903, he was appointed a deputy to the Provisional Government Junta, consisting of Jose Agustin Arango, Tomas Arias, and Federico Boyd. He served as an active member from November 9 to December 7, temporarily replacing Boyd. Espinosa Batista was also a prolific philanthropist and financier, granting scholarships to underprivileged students, supporting the orphanage that would become Don Bosco Technical Institute, rebuilding homes lost in a great fire in the city of Colon, and promoting the electrification of Panama City. For his contributions to the founding of the Republic of Panama, he is considered a Procer, or founding father.
