The son of Samuel & Mary Ann (Flowers) Irely, in 1850 he was living with his family in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census, although he may have relocated a short distance north to Middletown, Dauphin County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Middletown August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. His brother Samuel served in the same company.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 30, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865. His father served with Co. A, same regiment.

He married Catharine F. "Katie" Early December 27, 1865, in Dauphin County, and fathered William Henry "Harry" (b. 07/26/67), Anna K. (b. 08/29/69 - married Moses Zinn), John F. (b. 02/05/70 or 71), Christian E. (b./d. 09/12/72), Joseph B. (b. 10/21/77, d. 08/31/79), and Jennie Elizabeth (b. 01/09/82 - married Henry Whitehouse Logeman). Catherine died in 1904, and he married Alice Fink, née Manherz, forty-one years his junior, fathering Herbert D. (b. 09/12/12). Although he lived in Middletown, Dauphin County, for forty years and was a member of Harrisburg's Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R., by 1890 he was a resident of York County (apparently living with his daughter Jennie) where he died at Conewago Heights.

His father is buried as "Ireley," his brother Samuel as "Ierely," and nieces and nephews apparently spelled it "Eirley."
