In 1820, John is Head of Household in the 1820 US Federal Census, in Fayette, Seneca County, NY. The family consisted of 6 Colored Males, and 2 Colored Females. One of the Males may have been John's father, Charles.

Although Wikipedia says the family moved to Monroe County, Michigan about 1828, they were still in Fayette, Seneca Count, NY, according to the 1830 US Federal Census, as a Colored family of 3 Males and 5 Females. There is a difference in the Gender count between 1820 and 1830.

They are, however, in Ward 1 of the City of Monroe, Michigan, in the 1840 US Federal Census, still as a family of 8.

Prior to the 1850 US Federal Census, only Heads of Household Names were recorded. Age was not.
