Sister Mary Cherubim Schaefer, OSF, was born in Slinger, Wisconsin, 11 JAN 1886. She is the daughter of Bernard Schaefer and Mary Anna Heilmann. She was educated at St Peter School in Slinger, St Joseph Convent High School in Milwaukee and received her BM degree from Marquette University College of Music. Sister studied under Singenberger, Semmann, Zeitz, et al. She entered the School Sisters of St Francis, 21 Sept 1903 and was professed 4 JUL 1906. Sister was organist at St Lawrence Church, Milwaukee and director of music at St Joseph Convent. Sister was the founding director of St Joseph Convent Conservatory of Music, and later St Joseph Convent College of Music. Sister Cherubim is the author of Music Appreciation for Schools published in The Caecelia magazine, The Liturgical Choir Book, The Organist's Companion, as well as 45 mass settings, hymns, motets and numerous organ works. In 1938 Sister received the Caecilia annual award given to an outstanding musician in Catholic Church music in the United States. In 1947, Sister Cherubim compiled, edited and arranged the Alverno Hymnal.
