Joseph Berger, of Joplin, Missouri, a well-known local merchant and benefactor, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013, at the age of 93.

He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 13, 1919. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII where he achieved the rank of first lieutenant.

Joe moved to Joplin in 1949 and, together with his father, founded Pearl Brothers Hardware. In 2000, Joe donated the land and building for the Joplin Community Clinic. He was a lifetime member of the Joplin Elks Lodge 501 and a fifty year member of the Fellowship Masonic Lodge #345.

Additionally, he was a member of the United Hebrew Congregation, the Scottish Rite "Valley of Joplin", Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield, Missouri, Joplin Shrine Club and Joplin VFW.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Sadie Chrenen. He is survived by his wife Gertrude, son Harold of Joplin, and daughter Beverly of Phoenix, Arizona.

Funeral services including an Elks memorial, for Mr. Berger are 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the United Hebrew Congregation in Joplin, Missouri with Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Missouri.

Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Randy Bell, Don Cook, David McKeehan, Martin Milgrim, Jay Rosenberg and Alan Wippman. In lieu of flowers memorials are being directed to the Joplin Elks Lodge #501 or the United Hebrew Congregation and contributions may be left at the mortuary. On-line condolences may be sent to the family through our website www.thornhilldillon.com. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.
