Alexander was taught the craft of gunsmithing by his father. He was a Staff Sergeant Battalion 1 in the Prince of Wales Rifles during the Fenian Raids. In 1898 he was deemed still living, and therefore worthy of receiving his medals. I will post images of them. The image is courtesy of L BATCHELOR, great grandson of Alex, via his son Lawrence. Alex also fought in the Northwest Rebellion.
