Madison Bulware (sic) was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel at San Francisco December 14, 1864, and was mustered into Field & Staff, 7th California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco on January 9, 1865. Colonel Boulware was mustered out March 1, 1866. (Orton, p. 766)

Colonel M. [Madison] Boulware, at present a member of the Legislature from Sutter County, and a member of the Union State Central Committee, has received his Commission as Lieutenant Colonel of the Seventh Regiment Infantry, California Volunteers, now stationed at the Presidio.
