Joan Brown Worthington 82, of Jacksonville, Social Worker, Teacher, School Counselor Joan passed away peacefully at home, in view of her treasured trees. Born in Memphis, TN, Joan spent most of her life in Jacksonville, but also adventured to reside in Savannah, North Carolina, Ohio, Montana, California, and Utah.

Joan was a member of the Junior League, of Jacksonville, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, and the 1950-51 Debutante Coterie. She served the Community, on the Board of Directors, for the Jacksonville Symphony Association, and as President of the Opera Guild.

She was a student at Fletcher High School and Bartram, as well as Mills College, in California. She graduated with a BA in European History from Ohio State, and went on to earn her Masters in Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In her 50's, Joan earned a second Masters Degree in School Counseling from The University of North Florida.

Joan worked well into her 70's, passionately and tirelessly dedicated to supporting young people into leading happier, more productive lives. She lived her life authentically, with verve, and a distinctive style of her own. Fueled by her keen intellect, she was fiercely independent in thought, word, and deed.

Joan most loved her only child, daughter Helen, her nearly constant companion. She loved her students, and her work. She loved traveling, studying, and teaching children about the cultures, of The World. She was a patron of The Arts, and a brilliant scholar of music. She loved Opera, classical, and many other types of music. She loved the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Utah Symphony & Opera, and was an early Director of Public Relations, for, and dearly loved The Brevard Music Center. She loved dogs, horses, and her kitty; her furry little Guardian Angel, Baby, who never left her side. She adored gardening, camping in the great outdoors, trees, the mountains of North Carolina, to sit in streams, splash in waterfalls, and to swim in the Great Pacific.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen Worthington; nephew Judson Beebe Yerkes; niece Carlisle Beatrice Yerkes Stone, and Carlisle's three children. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Robin Fenton Worthington, and her sister Beatrice Carlisle Brown Yerkes.

She will be joined with her beloved earthen ground, and she will finally rest, along with her parents, Helen Scott Frame Brown, and Darwin Grant Brown at the Historic Evergreen Cemetery, in a private ceremony. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home 729 S. Edgewood Ave, Jacksonville has been entrusted with arrangements.
