Ann Durbin, 87, the mother of Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), died Wednesday in Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Md.

A resident of Kensington, Md., she was a railroad clerk for most of her working life. She was employed by the New York Central and later Penn Central railroads.

"She came to America as a little girl, overcame many obstacles in her life and left the best legacy: a strong family," Sen. Durbin said in a statement.

Mrs. Durbin was born in Lithuania. She immigrated to the United States in 1911 and settled in East St. Louis, Ill. In 1962, she moved to nearby Fairview Heights and later to Maryland. She was a former president of the St. Clair (County) Women's Club.

Also surviving are sons William and Robert, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kensington. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Kassley Mortuary, 9900 St. Clair St., Fairview Heights, Ill. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Belleville.
