Jeremiah was the son of Simeon Scripture and Anna Slafter. He married circa 1765 to Abigail Brigham, the daughter of John Brigham and Abigail Johnson.

Jeremiah bought lot #11, located in Tyringham, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, from his father-in-law John Brigham, on June 22,1771.

Jeremiah served in Captain Noah Lankton's Company, Colonel John Ashley's 1st Berkshire Massachusetts Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. He entered the service on July 8, 1777, at Tyringham, Massachusetts, and was discharged on July 27, 1777. He went on expedition to Kingsbury by order of General John Fellows. He is listed in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Federal Censuses for Massachusetts as living in Berkshire County, Town of Alford.
