In the early years of their marriage, Clyde worked in the Coal Mines is Alabama. Clyde and Fannie moved to Illinois in the 1950's where Clyde worked for Rock Island Mill Works and then John Deere. They later moved back to Marion County, AL and lived on County Highway 42.

He is the brother of Icy Rena Wates Pollard, Della Wates Akers, Alfred Wates, Daisy Wates Cagle, and Dell Wates.
