VICTOR VERCHEVAL PASSES AWAY
WELL-KNOWN KEOTA RESIDENT GIVES UP THE UNEQUAL STRUGGLE FOR LIFE
Victor Vercheval was a widely known and respected citizen of Keota. He was a victim of cancer, and for many months had been in confinement as the disease gradually overpowered him, and it was not unexpected news when Monday we learned of his death that morning at 12:30 o'clock. He was thus released from great suffering.
Victor Vercheval was born in Halle, Tenaye, France, October 22, 1848. Died May 19, 1919, at his home in Keota. He came to this country in 1864 with his father, mother and two sisters, who have preceded him in death. He settled in Washington county, living there continuously, except for seven years where he was contracting for railroads in the east. He then came to this county, settled on a farm west of town and lived in this community ever since.
On April 4, 1875, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Samuel Carmack, who had been Miss Tempie. Delphine Adams. To this union one son was born, Victor Edward, who now resides in California. This son, with Mrs. Carmack's daughter and son, Edna and Ira, constituted the family of this worthy pair and all three grew to maturnity sharing alike the love and care and bearing the name of Mr. Vercheval. Until eight years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Vercheval moved to Keota, their home was in Harper and from there the daughter Edna became the wife of J. O. Singmaster; Ira located in Minneapolis, and Edward went to California, selecting San Francisco as his home. On March 8, 1919, Mrs. Vercheval died. She also, was the victim of cancer.
Since her death, a little over two months ago, Mr. Vercheval's health has been failing rapidly. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Carmack of Minneapolis and Edward Vercheval of San Francisco, were with him. A few weeks ago Edward was called home, but Mr. and Mrs. Carmack remained at his bedside.
For a number of years he was actively connected with the breeding and importation business of his son-in-law, J. O. Singmaster, and is widely known among horsemen of the United States and Canada. Many friends mourn his loss.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Keota, Wednesday, May 21, conducted by Rev. T. F. Barker. Interment in the Keota cemetery.
