The wife, friend and political adviser of U.S. Rep. John Lewis died Monday at Emory University Hospital. She was 73. John and Lillian Lewis met at a New Year's Eve party, in 1967. The couple had been married for 44 years. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 407 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. She apparently had been ill for an extended period of time but encouraged her husband to continue with his career, representing Atlanta and Buckhead in the U.S. House of Representatives. She met her future husband when he was already a civil rights legend, and she played a key role in his transition to a career in politics.
