Mr. DeCordy's first name is quite unclear. The name William has only been found in his obit, so was this an informational error or a publisher's error? On the 1860 census, at the age of 2, his name was listed as James G. but no other reference of James has been found, at this time.

Mr. William de Cordy passed away last night at the Boyd Manor after an illness extending over several months. The deceased had lived in Wytheville for the past three years where he has made many friends. For a number of years he was connected with the Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company.
He is survived by his wife.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at three o'clock from the home, conducted by Rev. D. L. Gwathmay and interment will be in the East End cemetery.

Gordon's first wife was Katherine "Kate" M. Putman, born in New York. They were married September 8, 1886 in Rochester, New York. Kate's mother, Mary Putnam was a widow living with Gordon and Kate on the 1900 census.

Census records and city directory listings in Norfolk, Virginia from 1898 through 1910 gives Mr. DeCordy's occupation as various positions with the Virginia Iron & Coke Company or The Gordon DeCordy Coal & Wood Company.

No marriage record or information as been found about his wife, Bessie other than her name in the 1920 census when they were living in Pulaski, Virginia and Mr. DeCordy was listed as a coal expert at coal mines
