Unveiled and dedicated on May 28, 1999 in the presence of nearly 100 living recipients and guests, the National Medal of Honor Memorial is one of three sites approved by Congress to honor all recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for military valor and one which has often been awarded posthumously. The memorial features glass panels etched with the names of the 3,411 Medal of Honor recipients, their branch of service, and the locations of their heroic actions. There are 27 curved bluish-green glass walls, each between 7 and 10 feet tall, each representing the 15 conflicts, dating back to the Civil War, in which acts of bravery resulted in Medal of Honor awards. Each day as dusk, the sound system plays 30 minutes of recorded war stories about medal recipients and their acts. As each story is told. lights illuminate a portion of the memorial to highlight the war or conflict being discussed. Most of the stories have been recorded by Medal of Honor recipients.
