Two residents of near Sycamore were fatally injured and a third seriously injured when their automobile ran into the side of a westbound Pennsylvania freight train on the Main street crossing in Upper Sandusky about 4 p. m. Sunday.
Everett Grummel, 57, driver of the car, was instantly killed and his mother, Mrs. Agnes Grummel, 81, died in City hospital here shortly after arriving at the hospital. Grummel's wife, Mamie is in serious condition in City hospital but she is expected to recover. She suffered severe head injuries and bruises and cuts on the body.
The Grummels live on a farm near Sycamore and were returning from Columbus when the accident occurred. They had gone to Columbus to bring back Mrs. Agnes Grummel, who had been confined to University hospital in that city following an operation for removal of cataracts.
Wyandot county authorities were unable to explain the cause of the accident. The flashers were working at the crossing and the vision is unobstructed, it was reported
Drives Headon Into Train
Grummel apparently failed to notice the passing train, authorities said, as he drove the car directly into the side of the train a few cars back of the engine. He was driving a 1928 model automobile, which was demolished.
It was learn that Grummel was anxious to return home to do his chores early as he was to have appeared with the men's chorus of the Sycamore United Brethren church which sang at the Wyandot county Sunday School convention in Upper Sandusky Sunday night.
The bodies of Mr. Grummel and his mother have been removed to the Bender and Lucas Funeral home in Upper Sandusky.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon today.
