Carl served as a Staff Sergeant and Tail Gunner on B-26B "Skeeter" #42-95802, 573rd Bomber Squadron, 391st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 4, 1942 at Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Architect and also as Married.

B-26B #42-95802 took off, with a crew of 8, from Station 166, England on a bombing mission over Breast, France. They are believed to have been hit by ground anti-aircraft fire during the mission. After a successful bombing missing they were involved in a mid-air collision when one of the propellers from another B-26 struck the tail section of B-26B #42-95802 causing them to crash in France. Only one member of the crew survived the crash as did the other B-26.

Carl was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Service # 32251657

Husband of Maxine E. Teeter Norland who resided in Duncansville, Pennsylvania.

He was originally interred in France and was later repatriated here on July 11, 1949.

At the families request, his state of birth was added to his headstone (Minnesota) instead of his state of residence, as was normally done, (New York).
