A French couple (M/M Harel) are working to erect a memorial in their small town to honor an American fighter pilot who crashed while fighting on July 2, 1944 (see pics of the event). The pilot, John Carter, was killed along with seven French civilians. Initially he was buried in a temporary US military cemetery, but was repatriated at the request of the family in 1948 – 1949. He was finally buried in Mount Evergreen Cemetery.
