Henry Steele gave the original land for Veales Creek Cemetery around 1883. George W. Tompkins and his wife J.C. gave additional land in 1891, and C.J. O
Connor gave more land in 1940. In 1983, Frank and Dorothy Moreland gave land in front of the cemetery for expansion or parking.
Two different stories have been handed down about a grave located outside the fence. Some people say it is the grave of a rustler, and the people of the community would not allow him to be buried in the cemetery. Others tell the story of a young, unknown traveler who died in the night. Catharine Lewis and her son Nathan, with the help of neighbors, buried the young man. Grandsons of John and Catharine Brawner Lewis Caudill were resetting their grandparents' headstones in the 1970's; one of them rearranged the stones on the unmarked grave outside the fence and poured a cement square on one end. He scratched "stone" into the wet cemetery. Some now call the grave Mr. Stone's grave.
