THE NATHAN LIPSCOMB FAMILY CEMETERY
By Charles R. Andrews, III
Well hidden in pine woods near Old Star Fort and Ninety Six, SC lies the old family graveyard of Nathan Lipscomb, a pioneer of the South Carolina Upcountry.
In January, 2002 I visited the Lipscomb cemetery. It is the burying place for Nathan Lipscomb and members of his family, first used about 1807. In June, 2002 Margaret Jordan Andrews, my daughter, and I revisited the cemetery for a more thorough study.
Nathan Lipscomb was a son of Thomas (II) Lipscomb and Mary Smith of Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. Nathan was a grandson of Thomas (I) Lipscomb and Sarah McGehee/ MackGehee of Louisa Co., Virginia. Current research suggests that Thomas (I) may have been a son of William Lipscomb and Mary Swan of King William Co., Virginia. Evidence shows William to be a son of Ambrose (II) Lipscomb and a grandson of Ambrose (I) Lipscomb who immigrated to Virginia before 1679. 1 Yet, an old family tradition states that Thomas I's father was Joel Lipscomb, who came from England sometime after the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion and settled in Virginia about 1690. Unfortunately for this detailed and interesting tradition, no one has ever offered even as much as a single piece of evidence that anyone named Joel Lipscomb actually existed in the American colonies until Nathan's brother Joel, born 1760. In spite of no evidence, this tradition has been published, 2 often repeated, and refuses to die. In fact on the Internet, where undocumented genealogical assertions are regularly offered as fact and devoured whole by the naive, this glamourous and detailed tradition is alive and well. Is there any truth to it?
Nathan Lipscomb first married Tahpenes Bullock, a daughter of John Bullock and Mary Mitchell of Granville, Co., North Carolina and granddaughter of Richard Bullock and Anne Hensley. John Bullock and his brother Nathaniel Bullock moved to South Carolina, perhaps at the same time the Lipscombs came down. Nathan's marriage to Tahpenes may have taken place in Old Ninety Six District, South Carolina or may have occurred before he moved to South Carolina. Tahpenes is an unusual name, virtually unused today and frequently mis-transcribed and mis-spelled by researchers. It is a Biblical name. Tahpenes was wife of the pharaoh. Read 1 Kings 11: 19–20.
The old cemetery is located at the end of Waller Road off US 178 between Greenwood and Saluda.
There are a number of graves in the cemetery without tombstones. Of the 17 people known from inscribed tombstones to be buried in the Lipscomb cemetery, the order in which they died is as follows:
1. Tahpenes (Bullock) Lipscomb 1 Jan 1807 2. Nathan Lipscomb 26 Sep 1820 3. Ann Elizabeth Lipscomb 1 Sep 1821 4. Sophia Bonham Lipscomb 20 Sep 1822 5. Thomas Lipscomb 21 Feb 1823 6. James Bonham Lipscomb 22 Sep 1825 7. John Lipscomb 22 Sep 1825 8. Elizabeth (Lipscomb) Griffin 28 Aug 1828 9. William E. Brooks 4 Jan 1833 10. Henry Griffin Carwile 3 Sep 1844
11. Vincent Griffin 19 Dec 1846 12. Elizabeth Agnes (Lipscomb) McKellar 18 Jan 1847 13. Richard Griffin, Jr. 20 Nov 1850 14. Rebecca Elizabeth Carwile 21 Jun 1852 15. William H. Gaines 26 Jun 1854 16. Mary E. (McKellar) McKellar 3 Dec 1857 17. Willie E. McKellar 13 May 1858
Revisions August 24, 2004: Burial places of John Wesley Brooks and Ann Tahpenes Brooks identified. Ann Patience Butler's father corrected to Stanmore Butler, not Mason Stanmore Butler (Mason Butler was Stanmore's brother). Henry Ardis's name corrected to Henry Zubley Ardis and his daughters identified as Rosa and Henrietta. August 16, 2005: Added information on the identification of W. T. White, a name chiseled at the bottom of one of the stones.
