Photos

Ortega Cemetery began about 1891 and is still an active burial site. Its first burials were on private ranch land in an area formerly known as the "Milquatay Valley." The land on which Ortega Cemetery sits was subsequently claimed by the US Army, who started using the area for its cavalry as early as 1878. The area is also well known for its history with the "Negro Calvary" of the post-Civil War era, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers.

BURIALS
Buried in Ortega Cemetery are many early pioneers in the area, including the Ortega, Cameron, and Adams families. The cemetery may have been named after the former owners of the ranch land that was appropriated by the US Army for the Army base.

LOCATION
It is located inside the boundaries of the former Camp Lockett Army Base, across the Sheridan Road from the Old Cavalry Stables. If you're planning to visit this cemetery, keep in mind that you may encounter locked gates, and you'll need to drive through cow pastures to get to it.
