Merton Pioneer Cemetery was started sometime after 1881. The first burial was Mrs. William Olverson in 1890. There were probably around 40 graves here at one time. This area is better known today as a bird sanctuary and skeet shooting park than as a cemetery. Tall vegetation hides depressions and mounds of sod marking the burial sites. The wooden crosses which originally identified the graves have utterly vanished. A few of the deceased have been moved to other nearby cemeteries over the years. The whole area is only about one acre in size.

Karen Thoreson Solimar owns the land on which the cemetery lies. It was originally a part of a tree claim owned by Jane Thoreson Olverson, Irene Bennett's mother, who donated the northwest quarter to be used for a cemetery.
