Add PhotosIn 1978 the marker was photographed. It was located about 20 paces from the road and near large old cedars. On 5 January 2016, the marker was not found and probably under years of leaf mold. The old, large cedar tree stumps are there. This is across the street from 214-224 Howard Johnson Rd. where currently the Jones family resides on 5 Jan. 2016. The Oates marker is the only grave location found, but in 1978 there were several depressions and cedar stakes for "lost" graves there. Richard Wyatt Oates is #A212281 on the DAR Patriot's list. He had the rank of Soldier. His service description is that he received a Georgia Bounty Land Grant. His pension is #R7764.
Adjoining on the North of the Oates Family Cemetery is the Union Whitely Burial Ground, a large cemetery which is burial place for Afro-Americans. The Cemetery is several miles from the Church itself. That has led to confusion. The entry to the Union Whitely Burial Ground is on the west side of 264 Howard Johnson Rd.
