Located at the NW corner of the West Chicken Road and Roddy Highway intersection in northern Dodge County, the Swearingen Family Cemetery sits in the middle of a cotton field on land originally owned and farmed by four generations of the Swearingen family from the early 1800's until about 1960 when it was sold to the Jones family.
Historically, this area was opened to settlement with the Second or 1807 Georgia Land Lottery as a part of Wilkinson County and immediately became part of Laurens County on December 10th of that year. One year later on the 13th of December 1808, it became part of the newly formed Pulaski County and finally, in October of 1870, Dodge County was formed from Pulaski County. Bleckley County, which is immediately to the north of this location, was also formed from Pulaski County, but not until 1912.
Once sitting on a shady grassed knoll, this cemetery has picked up the name of the Jones Family Farm Burial Plot based on its location and with total disregard of who is buried there and it is deemed the Lenderman Cemetery by the Central Georgia Genealogical Society publications because of the four marked Lenderman gravesites. Beyond the marked and listed gravesites, there are currently 8 well established, but unmarked graves within the cemetery and a 15 January 2019 ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey has revealed an additional 18 unmarked earthen graves. With limited exception, these certainly belong to the generations of Swearingen family members, spouses, and children who lived on and around Land District 19; Lot 225, the location of this cemetery.
