John Jordan Family Graveyard
Washington County, Georgia, USA
Also based on the cemetery description writeup, the cemetery contains "numerous and faithful slaves that are buried near him (John Jordan) just outside the wall," along with descendants of the slaves who requested to be buried there (see also Tombstone Inscriptions of Washington County, by E. Newsom, 1967). Eye-witness accounts from the 1950s suggest there were depressions outside the wall on the east side, but the depressions are no longer visible.
The Tombstone Inscriptions of Washington County Cemeteries also suggests that in the 1950s there were 3 brick vaults and 4 granite markers (probably posts at the head and foot of graves). Only one brick vault remains, with a few scattered bricks suggesting the presence of the previous two brick vaults. The granite markers at head and foot also remain. It is assumed the people designated in unmarked graves below are in these graves.
Directions: From the intersection of Hwy 24 and Riddleville-Davisboro Rd. (Hwy 231) in Davisboro, go south on Riddleville-Davisboro Rd. (Hwy 231) for 2.2 miles. Turn right on a field road and go 0.3 mile. Turn left on another field road and go another 0.3 mile to the cemetery, which is at the right rear of the house. It is surrounded by a granite wall.
