Old Towns Cemetery
Also known as Old War Bluff Cemetery
Pope County, Illinois, USA
"North of Golconda, IL on Bushwhack Road; N37* 27.797' W088* 29.215' "
This primitive cemetery is on land owned by the Towns family who originally homesteaded in the vicinity beginning in 1818. Their land was located in Township 12 S, Range 7 E, Sec 19 in District Lands. This cemetery was originally located some distance behind the family barn according to Mabel Anderson Nolen (great granddaughter of Randal Towns) who referred to the cemetery as Old War Bluff.
Notes made earlier than 1980 by family members include the following information: There is an old cemetery there in the forest with a homemade sandstone for Randal Towns. A lot of small stones are scattered there with no names or dates, but there are some names who married into the Towns family: Jonathan Belford and his wife; Malvina, wife of Bluford Rose; William H Wilson son of W. I. and M. E. Wilson; and other undecipherable names.
