In December 1998, workman began moving the Andrew Wages Family Cemetery from the Wages' property on Savage Road in Jackson County to Barrow Memorial Gardens. This move was necessary because the Upper Oconee Water Basin was in the process of constructing the Big Bear Creek Reservoir to help supply water for the counties of Barrow, Jackson, Oconee and Clarke. Big Bear Creek will run through the edge of the cemetery , and graves might be inundated during times of flooding. There are 67 gravesites in the Wages' Cemetery.
On Saturday, April 10, 1999, the family held a memorial Service for the newly relocated cemetery with Maggie Brown of Athens and Attorney David Wages of Winder in charge. Officials from the four counties involved attended the service. Attorney Kirby Atkinson, who was responsible for the cemetery relocation for The Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority, gave a brief talk. Gordon Martin spoke on behalf of Southeastern Archaeological Services.
The earliest known burial in this cemetery was Winnie Wages who died about 1871. She was the wife of Andrew. (She was listed in the 1870 Census in Jackson County, and Andrew remarried in 1873.) The second burial was William S. Wages, who was almost two when he died in March, 1880. The third burial was Mary Wages Oldham who died in 1881. Her husband, 1st Corp. Issac W. Oldham, enlisted 10 Mar 1862, in Col. B., 43 Reg., GA Vols., Army of TN. The regiment was from Cherokee County, GA. Oldham was captured at Baker's Creek MS. on 16 May 1863. He died 26 or 28 June 1883, at Ft. Delaware, DE. He is buried at Finns Point National Cemetery in Salem, NJ. The family has placed a marker in his memory next to the grave of his wife Mary. The last person buried here was Susie M. Nicholson who died 23 Aug 1975.
On March 21, 1929, Jasper I. Wages donated one half acre of his land "for purposes for the Wages family." It was to include "the present burial ground." Jasper was the son of William M. Wages and the grandson of Andrew Wages.
All four of Andrew Wages' sons were in Co. E, 13th GA Cavalry during the Civil War. They were William M., John Sanford, James and Andrew Jackson Wages.
