This cemetery is on private property, owned by the family of John H. & Hannah Watkins Underwood for approximately 120 years. However, there are even older still-legible tombstones, indicating the cemetery was originally established when the property was owned by Henry Watkins, father of Hannah Watkins Underwood. Henry Watkins had settled in Cherry Log in the 1840s and apparently followed an old custom of establishing a "burying ground" on his own property for family and friends. All of the earliest still-legible tombstones are either descendants of Henry Watkins or had a direct connection to him.
There are some interesting and perhaps unusual traditions connected to Underwood Cemetery. There have never been any restrictions regarding access to this cemetery; until recent years (after 2005), it had not been necessary to obtain permission for a burial in this cemetery. The cemetery has gradually expanded, and the number of graves is now in excess of 400. Almost one-fourth of those graves are very old, unidentified, and marked only with rocks.
Many of the families buried at Underwood Cemetery attended Rock Creek Baptist Church, located about a mile south. Thus, when the church celebrates "Homecoming" each year on the second Sunday of July, they begin the day with a memorial service at Underwood Cemetery.
Historically the Underwood Cemetery was maintained by volunteers, residents of Cherry Log who had family members buried at this cemetery. Maintenance became somewhat sporadic as life-styles changed. In 1989, an Underwood Cemetery Fund was established to ensure regular maintenance of the cemetery. Donations to this fund are tax-deductible and can be made directly to the BB&T Bank in either Ellijay or Blue Ridge.
