According to the church cornerstone and descendants, slave holders permitted the slaves to worship at nearby Amity Baptist Church which was a white only church but only at designated time each month. After freedom was granted the Blacks continued to use Amity as their church until 1881. Through a white citizen of the area the Blacks were deeded land for their own church they called Indian Ridge due to the Indians that lived along the ridge line the church sits on and more land was added later. In the early years the members used the Rodgers Cemetery about one mile to the south on the Hill Old Mill Road until the new cemetery was established. For many years this church was considered as having the largest membership of any Black church in Clarke County. The present building was constructed in 1954. Abstracted from the Application for registry in the Alabama Commission of Higher Education Alabama History Cemetery registry.
