Fair Oaks Plantation Cemetery

About a mile west of US 319 on Blackshear Road some 8 miles south of Thomasville, the cemetery sits about 50 yards east of the Fair Oaks mansion, bordered by a wrought iron fence and narrow growth of trees. There are 41 visible graves in the cemetery, with 24 of them identified by name, and one additional unmarked grave for someone whose burial has been documented. There are 18 other simple, mainly brick-bordered graves that, because of their sizes, appear to be for infants or young children.
All of the graves appear to be for members of the immediate family of Richard and Sophronia Dickey Mitchell, including their children and their spouses, and their grandchildren. The oldest dated burial in the Fair Oaks Cemetery is from 1836; the most recent burial dates to 1945.
