During the War Between the States, Confederate troops converted Sand Hill into a hospital. General Sherman's troops burned the church in February 1865 during Sherman's "March To the Sea." The initial site of the first church is up for debate. It is now near Anderson Crossroad, off of Highway 278.
The cemetery is located less than a 1/4 mile from the Church today.
