Located at the entrance of Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville. Traveling south on Sanders Ferry Road, turn left after Drakes Creek Marina at the sign to the park. The cemetery is on the left, or lake side of the road, fronted by a wood rail fence. See map.
October 2009: well-mown and easily accessible. Four extant markers. Room for several more graves and sunken areas indicative of other burials.
Cemetery & surrounding tract formerly owned by James Sa(u)nders, a prominent landholder who operated a Cumberland River ferry here, and also conveyed land for the Drake's Creek Meeting House (Methodist) which stood nearby. Substantial portions of this and the Daniel Smith (Rock Castle) tracts, once separated by Drake's Creek, were flooded by the impoundment of Old Hickory Lake in the 1950s.
This cemetery is closely associated with the Smith Family Cemetery at Rock Castle, where markers to both James and his second wife, Mary (nee: Smith) Donelson Sanders, are now located. Both are said to have been originally interred here, although one or both graves may have been removed to Rock Castle.
Notice of James Sa(u)nders' death was published 31 Aug 1836 in the National Banner & Nashville Whig. On 12 Sept 1836, the paper published the following account of Pres. Andrew Jackson's visit with the now twice widowed Mary, whose first husband, Samuel Donelson, was his brother-in-law:
"The President of the United States left the Hermitage yesterday (Sunday, 11th inst:) afternoon, crossing the Cumberland into Sumner county, at Saunders' ferry, and tarried last night at Mrs. James Saunders'. It is understood that he will see his friends at Gallatin to-day, and then proceed through Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania, to Washington City."
