My Gray & Walker Family

The Grays arrived in Canada with my great-grandfather, James Henry Gray, as a young man sent over to the Barnardo Industrial Farm in Russell, Manitoba after he father was killed in an accident and his mother left him on Mighell's Farm in Croydon where his family were tenants. Some of James's siblings followed him to Canada as British Home Children from Barnardos, and James married the daughter of one of his indenture farms, Sarah May Charles. The Walkers came up from Georgia and NC in the American South, first heading to the Georgia Colony in La Veta, Huerta County in Colorado in the 1880s to mine. Part of the extended Walker family became Mormons and went on to Utah; a ranch they owned would eventually become part of the Bountiful, B.C. FLDS outpost.Oliver McLemore Walker was born a McClemore by his neglectful father from Missouri, but was adopted and given the surname of his grandfather Absolom Walker's name. He moved to British Columbia to work on the Douglas Lake Ranch and met his wife there, Isobel "Belle" MacAvoy, a granddaughter of Byron Earnshaw and Sinciliex Amy Raphael. They and their children, and those children of Belle and her second husband, Thomas Wilkinson, settled in British Columbia. Their descendants are there now and in Florida.
